ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia began operating Airbus 330 planes on Tuesday for the Jakarta-Palembang route in anticipation of an increase in air traffic ahead of the 2018 Asian Games, which begin on Aug. 18.
Previously, Garuda Indonesia used the smaller Boeing 737-800 planes for the route.
“Starting Aug. 7, we began operating larger planes for 26 flights from Jakarta to Palembang,” Garuda Indonesia operational director Triyanto Moeharsono said in Jakarta on Monday as reported by kontan.co.id.
He said the 26 flights, which had a capacity of 4,510 seats, would be operated from Aug. 7 to Sept. 4.
The airline was also prepared to transport equipment for the Asian Games if necessary, Triyanto added.
Jakarta and Palembang will co-host the event, which is expected to bring in 40,000 visitors and 16,000 athletes and officials from 45 Asian countries. (bbn)
