The Ranu Welum Foundation, an indigenous filmmaking community based in Palangka Raya, Kalimantan, will present a film festival themed “Indigenous Leads: Bringing Forth the Ancient Sound, Embracing the Heritage”, seeking to understand and celebrate the cultures of the indigenous people, from Aug. 29 to Sept. 15 across different places in Kalimantan.
The film festival will also celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on Aug. 9.
The festival’s main program will take place from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 in Palangka Raya. Then, from Sept. 3 to 7, it will continue with a roadshow where the films will be screened publicly around West Kalimantan. Then the festival will conclude with a fringe program comprising film screenings in Barito — home to the Dayak Maanyan people — from Sept. 9 to 15.
The festival will screen 25 films and videos — comprising documentary and fiction — on the subject of indigenous communities from local and international filmmakers.
Films to be screened include Erick Est’s Long Sa’an — the Journey Back (2017) detailing the lives of the Dayak people in Kalimantan, as well as Raymond Hartman’s Solution from the Jungle (2016), about a factory in Tengkawang, West Borneo, and many more.
On the sidelines of the film screenings, the organizer will also present filmmaking workshops and discussion sessions. While being open to public, the festival specifically strives to engage as many indigenous communities as possible in its various programs.
