alm before the storm: Street vendors occupy parts of Jl. Jatibaru in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, as permitted by the Jakarta administration last year. The installation of steel components for Zone A of the Tanah Abang skywalk in Central Jakarta will take place on Aug. 17, a city official has said.
“We have erected fences around the skywalk construction site,” PD Pembangunan Jaya executive director Yoory C. Pinontoan said as quoted by tempo.co on Sunday, adding that the steel components of the bridge would be delivered to the site from Aug. 14 to 17.
The 400-meter-long bridge will connect Tanah Abang Station and all the local market’s blocks. It will be divided into four zones — A, B, C and D — each of which will be 100 m in length. Some 80 percent of the construction has been completed at the factory that manufactured the components. Workers will only need to install the frame at the skywalk’s designated location.
“We aim to finish the Zone A construction project within 10 days. The other zones should also be completed within 10 days each,” he said.
The city reportedly allocated Rp 35.8 billion (US$2.5 million) for the project.
It is expected that street vendors will occupy the skywalk and vacate Jl. Jatibaru, the congested street that connects the train station and the market, which is one of the largest textile hubs in Southeast Asia.
