he city administration has dropped a plan to close seven tollgates to ease traffic congestion during the Asian Games, the police have said.
Jakarta Police traffic division head Sr. Comr. Yusuf said, based on the simulation evaluations, the tollgates would only be closed if necessary.
“[We will] close them only if it’s needed, depending on the situation,” he said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.
“If there are buses of athletes about to use the toll roads, we can close the gates to the public for 10 to 30 minutes,” he added.
The tollgate closure plan was aimed at giving priority access to Games’ athletes and officials traveling from the athletes village in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, to sporting venues. The city initially planned to close four tollgates from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and three others from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m.
“There is no longer severe congestion on the roads connecting the village and the venues because of [the implementation of] the odd-even license plate policy,” he said, referring to the expansion of the odd-even license plate policy to several main roads in the city.
