7-year-old boy was killed when a blaze on Sunday ripped through a hut on his family’s farm in Nanga Tikan village, Melawi regency, West Kalimantan.
The Melawi Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Monday that a wildfire broke out and burned down the hut that Vito, his brother Rio, 12, and father Adong, 65, were in.
The two surviving victims suffered severe burns and were taken to Citra Husada Hospital in Nanga Pinoh, Melawi. Vito died from his injuries while Rio and Adong remain in critical condition.
Melawi Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Ahmad Fadlin said he had sent a team to investigate the site. He suspected that the fire was started by Vito’s family, but could not confirm his suspicion, as no witnesses were present at the time of the incident.
The Melawi Police have instructed residents to avoid using slash-and-burn methods to prevent wildfires.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency recorded 2,130 hot spots in West Kalimantan from Aug. 3 to 13.
