he Jakarta Police have apprehended more suspects in drugs-related cases as part of an antidrug operation called Nila Jaya, which was conducted from Sept. 12 to 26 and was driven by tips from the public.
As many as 539 suspects were arrested during the crackdown. They comprise two alleged producers, three alleged dealers, 490 suspected traffickers and 44 alleged users from 443 reported cases, said Jakarta Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Wahyu Hadiningrat.
They could be charged under the narcotics law and the antimoney laundering law, he added.
A similar operation conducted last year netted 351 suspects. The reported number of cases also increased 52 percent.
“The number grew thanks to information provided by the public,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said in a press conference on Monday.
He added that the suspects had been arrested in various locations, such as houses, entertainment centers and on the streets.
From the 14-day operation, the police found that West Jakarta was the most drug-prone area in the capital, from which officers arrested 64 suspects, followed by South Jakarta with 60 suspects, and East Jakarta and Tangerang in Banten with 52 suspects, respectively.
Eight different types of drugs were seized during the operation, which involved 585 police personnel from the Jakarta Police drug directorate and 13 police precincts. Sabu-sabu (crystal methamphetamine) topped the list, followed by marijuana, ecstasy, heroin and happy five pills.
Jakarta Police destroyed the confiscated drugs on Monday at Garbage Plant-Sanitation Angkasa Pura in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang. (sau)
