India won its second gold in badminton after its men's singles player, Tarun, defeated Indonesian Fredy Setiawan in the standing lower 4 (SL4) (impairment in lower limbs) category final on Saturday.
Tarun defeated Fredy in an exhausting three-round game 21-10, 13-21 and 19-21.
The 24-year-old shuttler from New Delhi said his focus had helped him win the game. He did not think about anything else but giving his best performance, he said.
"It feels really great. It is a dream come true," Tarun said at a press session after the match.
In the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea, Tarun was defeated by Fredy in the final. Tarun said he felt really satisfied to have beaten Fredy this time.
He added that he was happy that Indonesian former shuttler Taufik Hidayat watched the game.
When he first began to play badminton at the age of 11, Tarun said he adored Taufik and Chinese badminton superstar Lin Dan. Tennis player Roger Federer is also one of his favorite athletes.
Tarun said he targeted more triumphs in the 2019 Para Badminton World Championships and the 2020 Paralympics.
Previously, Indian women's singles player Parmar Parul Dalsukhbhai won gold after defeating Thai shuttler Kamtam Wandee in the SL 3 class. (dic)
