The vertical drainage system is currently being tested in several locations.
The Jakarta administration plans to install a citywide vertical drainage system to prevent flooding in the nation's capital.
Governor Anies Baswedan said the system would guide rainwater to drain into the ground. This way, excess water would not collect on the ground or cause excessive runoff in the city's gutters, canals and rivers that would lead to a higher risk of floods.
"We'll launch [the project] very soon, but for now, the drainage [system] remains on trial in several locations in the city," he said on Sunday at the Ciliwung River in Condet, East Jakarta, as quoted by tempo.co.
The drainage system would also help prevent floods during the rainy season, when the city's rivers tended to overflow even when they were unobstructed, said Anies.
Aside from the vertical drainage system, the Jakarta administration has also readied an emergency response team in riverbank areas to anticipate rising waters during rain.
Earlier, the Jakarta Water Agency also said that it had prepared anti-flooding programs, including dredging the Ciliwung River in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta and in Bukit Duri, South Jakarta.
Agency head Teguh Hendarwan said that the agency had also readied pumps in 153 locations and 102 mobile pumps for draining floodwater. (ris)
