Police seized knives, machetes, crowbars, sign posts, subpoenas and land certificates from the suspects.
Twenty-three suspected gang members accused of intimidating and extorting land owners have been arrested in Kalideres, West Jakarta.
West Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Hengki Haryadi said the suspects were arrested while vandalizing a property.
“The gang members are members of the Hercules group. They were arrested when they were breaking down a fence and intimidating the land attendants,” Hengki said as quoted by antaranews.com on Monday.
Hengki said the suspects had been extorting the land occupants since August, but the alleged victims were too afraid to report the case to the police. l
The plots of land where the suspects allegedly operated were reportedly owned by PT Nila Alam and PT Tamara Garden.
Hengki said 10 people were arrested for allegedly breaking into PT Nila Alam’s marketing office. The 10 suspects allegedly asked land occupants for Rp 500,000 (US$ 33.63) every month.
Meanwhile, 13 people were arrested while reportedly breaking down a fence owned by PT Tamara Green Garden.
Police seized knives, machetes, crowbars, sign posts, subpoenas and land certificates from the suspects.
The suspects have been charged under Article 167 of the Criminal Code on beating, extortion and trespassing, which carries a punishment of more than three years’ imprisonment. (gis)
