teacher in Kendal, Central Java, reportedly got into a fight with students in a classroom after one of them threw a paper ball at him, prompting criticism about the education system in the regency.
A video showing students of SMK Nahdlatul Ulama 03 Kaliwungu vocational senior high school punching and kicking the middle-aged teacher went viral over the weekend.
The teacher reportedly fought back with a spinning kick after allegedly getting pushed by students. None of the attacks caused injuries, while the students were said to have laughed while the teacher tried to defend himself.
Kendal Regent Mirna Annisa visited the school on Monday to seek clarification over the incident after being flooded with questions.
“They have no ethics. It tarnished the education system,” Mirna said.
In the video, four 16-year-old students identified as PM, SN, MM and AA appeared to be teasing Joko Susilo, 54, the teacher, while another student identified as AM, 16, recorded the incident on Thursday.
At the end of the video, the teacher’s shoe slips off while doing the spinning kick. He eventually returns to his desk, opens a book and carries on with his lesson.
“It was just a joke, but when it went too far. There was no violence, no beating,” Joko said.
He said a meeting with participants of the incident had taken place to discuss the matter.
“I hope such an incident doesn’t reoccur in this school or any other school,” Joko said.
School principal Muhaidin said the incident had taken place during the last hour of class on Thursday.
“It was just a joke. We have summoned both the teachers and students for further information because the video went viral on Friday,” Muhaidin said.
