SLH and BS sold fake certificates for Rp 400,000 (US$27) each, while originals cost only Rp 170,000.
woman and her son, identified as SLH and BS, respectively, have been arrested in Koja, North Jakarta, for selling fake marriage certificates.
According to Adj. Comr. Andry, head of the Koja Police’s criminal investigation unit, SLH took over the business from her husband J after he passed away in 2017.
J was a former Religious Affairs Office (KUA) employee who had allegedly been counterfeiting wedding certificates since the 2000s, kompas.com reported.
A marriage certificate usually costs Rp 170,000 (US$ 11.47), but SLH and BS sold fake ones for Rp 400,000 each. They sold about 10 certificates a month.
The fake certificates have a slightly different color from the original and some details are handwritten when they should be printed.
SLH and BS told the police that the certificates they had been selling were leftover stock provided by a person identified as AN, for whom the police are currently searching. (cal)
