All passengers are safe after a ferry carrying passengers and vehicles ran aground east of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara on Thursday.
The Kalebi ferry with passengers and vehicles on board ran aground at Gili Lebur, east of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, shortly after leaving Kayangan Port in Lombok, bound for Poto Tano Port in Sumbawa on Thursday. No passengers were hurt.
“It ran aground due to strong wind and heavy rain,” Mataram Search and Rescue Agency spokesperson I Gusti Lanang Wiswananda said.
He added that there were no fatalities in the accident, even though there had been a problem in the evacuation process due to heavy rain and the high tide.
The rescue personnel, he said, successfully evacuated the passengers to Poto Tano Port on Thursday afternoon, using the Marina Quinta ferry.
According to state-owned seaport operator PT ASDP Kayangan records, the ferry was carrying 26 passengers, 32 motorbikes, six cars, four medium-size trucks, three small trucks, one large bus and one medium-sized bus.
ASDP Kayangan Port head Cuk Prayitno added that the ferry had run aground while trying to avoid other ships. (ggq/swd)
