span>The Foreign Ministry has revealed that eight Malaysian nationals have fallen victim to earthquake-triggered landslides at the Tiu Kelep waterfall in North Lombok regency, West Nusa Tenggara.
“There were eight foreign nationals among the victims. They were Malaysians. Two were killed while six others were injured,” ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said at a press briefing in Jakarta on Monday.
He said the injured Malaysians had been taken to the hospital and the ministry was in touch with the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta.
The Malaysian Embassy had come out with a separate report stating that 22 of its citizens had been at the tourist site when a 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook the region on Sunday afternoon, causing landslides. The bodies of the two deceased, identified as Tai Siew Kim and Lim Sai Wah, were recovered and returned on Sunday. The rest of the group were unaffected.
In a later statement, the Malaysian Embassy said its officials had arrived in Lombok on Monday morning to provide consular assistance to the survivors.
“Malaysian citizens who are in Lombok or the surrounding area are called to always be calm and comply with the latest directives issued by local authorities,” the embassy said.
The latest earthquake occurred just seven months after a deadly string of tremors struck Lombok, killing almost 500 people and injuring thousands more.
