T

he four state officials who were targeted for assassination during the May 22 riots in Central Jakarta comprised senior security and intelligence officials, the National Police confirmed on Tuesday.

The names included Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto, Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan as well as State Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Budi Gunawan, National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said.

Gories Merre, formerly of the police’s Densus 88 counterterrorism squad and who now works on President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s special staff for intelligence affairs, was also targeted for killing, Tito said.

The police recently arrested six people on suspicion of plotting the murder of the four state officials, allegedly planned to take place amid the postelection protests that turned into deadly riots in the capital.

“We got this not from intelligence information, but from the results of investigation into the suspects,” Tito told a press conference on Tuesday.

The six suspects, who were arrested in different times and locations around Greater Jakarta last week, were reportedly found to be in possession of illegal firearms, including rifles, which the authorities believe were the weapons to be used in the assassinations.

“We are still hunting the mastermind [behind the plot],” Tito said.
