It was not a regular kite-flying activity for the local teens as it was part of the ongoing protests by residents against state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura.
The teenagers were directed to play with the kites there, aiming to disrupt flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
Besides the kites and burning tires, residents also staged protests on Monday where they blocked Jl. Perimeter Utara, the main road north of the airport.
The residents blocked the road with bamboo, tree trunks and shattered glass to voice their protest.
“Let death be the price! Compensate us, execution is not the solution. We are prepared to defend our land,” the banners laid on the fences separating the construction site of the third runway of the airport and the neighborhood said.
The residents had been protesting against the company over alleged unpaid compensation for their land for the construction of the new runway.
