T

he COVID-19 health crisis in Indonesia continues to improve, with the number of new cases falling in the past seven consecutive weeks and the country recently recording its lowest positivity rate.

Although the four-tiered public activity restrictions (PPKM) remain in place in all provinces across the archipelago, the government has been easing curbs as the situation improves.

According to the latest World Health Organization situation report on Indonesia published on Wednesday, the country recorded some 55,000 cases in the week of Aug. 30 to Sept. 5, a 42 percent decrease from the week before. Weekly deaths dropped 29 percent to around 3,900, from some 5,500 in the previous week.

Nationwide COVID-19 hospital bed occupancy, meanwhile, has declined in the past three weeks, with occupancy rates for isolation beds standing at 20 percent and ICU beds at 30 percent, the WHO report said.

This is far lower than the 90 percent recorded in July when the Delta variant-fueled surge of infections devastated the country.

On Tuesday, the country recorded a daily positivity rate — the proportion of people testing positive per day — of 4.57 percent. This was the lowest figure since March 2020, when the pandemic first hit the country, according to the government.

Since its July peak, the average positivity rate has fallen steadily, from 23.8 percent in the first week of August to 11.3 percent in the final week of that month, data from the government showed.
