T

aman Impian Jaya Ancol in North Jakarta is welcoming the 2018 Asian Games by holding a lantern festival as part of the park’s Asian Festival series of events.

Taking place at Festival Beach, the event started on Aug. 10 and will run until September. Open to the public, the lanterns are shaped like famous landmarks and mascots from Asian countries, among them the Taj Mahal, the Merlion (Singapore's official mascot, a half-lion half-fish) and ondel-ondel (giant Betawi effigies). Some are placed on the ground, while others float on the sea.

“The Ancol Lantern Festival is the first and the biggest [event] that is held in Ancol,” said Sunarto, vice president of Ancol Dreamland, in a press release. “Aside from displaying icons of Asia, we also display Jakarta’s icons as one of the ways to introduce the archipelago’s culture.”

Visitors are able to enjoy music and dance performances from different Asian countries, including taiko drums from Japan, the tinikling dance from the Philippines and the buchaechum dance from Korea. Moreover, the park is also holding a culinary festival featuring foods and beverages originating from several countries in Asia. For coffee and tea enthusiasts, there will be the Asian Coffee and Tea Beach Festival from Aug. 16 to 26 from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Ancol Monument. (wir/wng)
