Streets of the city were busy with people commuting to schools and workplaces just days ago, now they are packed with holiday-goers visiting tourist attractions around the city.
The Jakarta Post went to several popular destinations to find out how the city is preparing itself to accommodate the influx of people visiting Jakarta-must-sees during the Christmas and New Year break.
National Monument (Monas)
The National Monument (Monas) is clearly no exception. Standing on Merdeka Square in the heart of the city, Jakarta’s icon remains a major destination, especially for those coming from outside Jakarta.
“This is our first time coming here. We want to sightsee Jakarta from the peak,” said 50-year-old Arifin Grisya, who had come from Ambon, Maluku, with his wife and two children to visit Monas in Central Jakarta on Saturday.
Merdeka Square is a large green area of 75 hectares where visitors can have a picnic and ride tourist trains, bicycles or scooters. But the joyous vibes began with a long queue to go inside the landmark.
