s the country with the world's largest nickel deposits, Indonesia has been accelerating development of the mineral's downstream industry to be able to keep up with increasing global demand for electric vehicle (EV) battery production and stainless steel. The steep increase in Indonesian nickel supply has rattled global production, with closures of mining operations in other countries.
Publicly listed mining giant PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (Harita Nickel) president director Roy Arman Arfandy spoke to The Jakarta Post’s Divya Karyza and Adisti Sukma Sawitri about the company’s business strategy to remain competitive in the global market and its future in the national EV supply chain.
Question: What is Harita Nickel’s short-term strategy to stay competitive in the global market considering the declining nickel price and the shutting down of some nickel processing plants abroad?
Answer: We remain focused on becoming the lowest-cost producer of nickel in Indonesia by harnessing our strategic advantages. For example, besides being located in coastal areas, our mining sites are also adjacent to the processing facilities, which enables the company to cut transportation costs.
This is what makes us competitive. It has been proven that many global players are no longer able to compete with Indonesia because they have production costs that are significantly higher than the average production costs in Indonesia.
