mbon-based women’s rights activist Bai Hadjar Tualeka (left in photo) was named on Wednesday as the winner of the 2012 Saparinah Sadli Award, beating 21 other nominees from across Indonesia.
Bai received the trophy from Saparinah Sadli, a long-time defender of women’s rights.
“I hope this award can inspire me to continue my fight to achieve peace in Ambon. I dedicate [the award] to all the mothers and children of Ambon who have inspired me and taught me innumerable lessons throughout my life,” she told The Jakarta Post shortly after the award ceremony.
Born in 1974, Bai has served as the coordinator of the Women and Children Empowerment Council (Lappan) in Ambon since 2002.
She also actively promotes peaceful conflict resolution, the prevention of violence and human rights issues in Maluku.
