foreign national, identified as Ng Eng Aun, aka Piter, was shot dead by a joint team from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), the Police and the Customs Office after he resisted a drug trafficking-related arrest at a hotel in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, on Tuesday.
BNN drug eradication deputy chief Insp. Gen. Arman Depari said the arrest had been made after the law enforcers had previously rounded up another suspect, Edy Aris Wicaksono, on Jl. Trans Kalimantan in Kubu Raya regency. Inside Edy’s car, the investigators found two kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as sabu sabu, and over 30,000 ecstasy pills.
“As has been the modus operandi in past cases, the drugs were hidden under piles of various supplies to avoid police searches,” Arman was quoted as saying by kompas.com in a press conference at the West Kalimantan Police headquarters on Wednesday.
Edy told the investigators that Piter had given him instructions to transport the drug. Law enforcers tracked Piter and found him in a hotel. The officers shot Piter dead after he resisted arrest and attempted to escape.
Arman said that Piter, believed to be a Malaysian national, was wanted by the law enforcers related to another drug smuggling case involving 25 kilograms of crystal meth at the border area.
According to Arman, the drug smugglers had apparently shifted to land routes to avoid the massive trafficking crackdown across Indonesia’s waters that was recently launched by the authorities. In the latest major drug bust, the police and customs officers thwarted an attempt to smuggle 1.8 tons of crystal meth by boat in Natuna waters.
