ollowing its Silaturahmi Merajut Kebangsaan (Friendly Meeting: Uniting the Nation) tour, which ended at the Amanatul Ummah Islamic boarding school in Mojokerto, East Java, on Sept.17, legendary rock band Slank visited the Tjiwi Kimia paper factory, an Asia Pulp Paper (APP) Sinar Mas industrial unit located in Mojokerto-Sidoarjo.

Tjiwi Kimia is APP Sinar Mas’ first factory and where famous paper brands, including SiDu, Paperline, Mirage and other brands are produced.

Tjiwi Kimia was established by Eka Tjipta Widjaja in 1971. The name Tjiwi is taken from Widjaja’s middle and last names. At first, the factory produced soda and other chemical products. In 1976, a Tjiwi Kimia factory was established on Jl. Raya Surabaya – Mojokerto KM 44 in Kramat Tumenggung village, Tarik district, Sidoarjo regency, East Java.

In 1978, the factory began producing paper with two papermaking machines. Since then, the factory has been known as a producer of chemical products and paper.

Slank vocalist Kaka, guitarist Ridho, bassist Ivanka and drummer Bimbim visited the factory with band manager Bunda Iffet and cultural observer Zastrouw Al Ngatawi.

.

At first, the group visited Tjiwi Kimia’s exercise book factory, where they closely listened to the explanation of a Tjiwi Kimia employee about the processes involved in producing an exercise book.

“Cool, sophisticated, export quality,” Bimbim said after taking a tour through the factory and seeing the paper-making process.

Kaka was all smiles and asked the Tjiwi Kimia management representative a lot about the paper production process.

“It’s awesome that I can see the paper production process directly. I once visited a factory, but the processes here are more complicated,” Kaka said.

At the Tjiwi Kimia product showroom, Bunda Iffet was amazed upon seeing a shopping bag with a renowned international brand at one of the collection display cabinets.

“You go shopping so far away abroad, and the shopping bag is made right here in Mojokerto,” she quipped.

After taking the factory tour, Slank held a surprise acoustic performance at the lobby of Tjiwi Kimia main office. Hundreds of employees who were in the middle of their lunch break gathered around in the lobby.

.

Slank opened their performance with the song Mars Slankers (Slankers’ March), an anthem for the working class that encouraged Slankers – the affectionate name for Slank fans – to work hard and not be lazy.

Next, the band performed the hit song Terlalu Manis (Too Sweet). They finished their brief performance with the song Ku Tak Bisa (I Can’t) and Tjiwi Kimia employees joined the band in singing the song.
