he Workers Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) recently contributed to the improvement of tourism facilities in Lake Toba in North Sumatra to improve the economic welfare of its locals by setting up a miniature of a Huta Ginjang (North Sumatran traditional house) in the lake’s compound through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.

The lake, located in North Sumatra’s North Tapanuli regency, has been named among the 10 regions designated by the Indonesian government to be developed as new national tourism destinations.

BPJS Ketenagakerjaan president director Agus Susanto and supervisory board member Rekson Silaban, accompanied by North Tapanuli Regent Nikson Nababan, visited the lake on Sept. 1 to officially launch the miniature of the traditional house.

In its official press release, the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan stated that it had chosen to erect the traditional house as a space for tourists to take a little nap or break during their trip to the area.

“The reason we are attempting to push Lake Toba tourism forward is because we believe that adequate tourism facilities can create a multiplier effect to residents who live in the vicinity of the lake, which in turn will support the national economy,” Agus stated as quoted by the press release.

According to Agus, the multiplier effect includes the creation of new jobs, which will also benefit the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, as labor absorption will help the organization’s insurance program sign additional members.

The North Tapanuli regency’s tourism agency stated in the press release that to further boost tourism in Lake Toba, it planned to establish a geo-park tourist area offering visitors many outdoor activities nearby the lake.
