APRIL Group highlights commitment to recycling, circularity at Expo 2020 Dubai

L

eading global pulp and paper producer APRIL Group has highlighted its continued commitment to sustainability and improving circularity across its operations at Expo 2020 in Dubai.

Running from Oct. 1, 2020, to March 31 of this year, the World Expo is the third-largest event in the world after the Olympics and the World Cup, with a total of 192 countries participating in Dubai, including Indonesia.

The Indonesia Pavilion at the Expo exhibits the country’s emerging technologies, business opportunities and cultural attractions, as well as its vision for a sustainable future. The pavilion is supported by sponsorships from its partners, including APRIL Group.

At the Expo, PaperOne, the flagship brand of APRIL Group, announced details of its Paper Once More! recycling program, which runs across key markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. These programs are aligned with APRIL’s commitment to improving material efficiency and circularity.

.

Paper One will collaborate with document disposal and recycling partners in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to support the collection of paper waste. In Dubai, PaperOne is partnering with a paper shredding company to collect waste paper from various business locations across the country for recycling.

Collectively, PaperOne estimates that the Paper Once More! program will help recycle around 20,000 tons of paper waste in its first year of operation, with a potential for expansion. PaperOne will also recycle 1 ton of waste paper for every ton that is purchased by customers in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia through official branded online channels.

APRIL Group chairman Bey Soo Khiang said the Paper Once More! Program was a major part of the company’s commitment to becoming increasingly circular and sustainable as a business.

“The future growth of our business depends on our ability to become more circular, productive and diversified in a way that is sustainable and benefits climate, nature and people,” he said.

In 2020, APRIL launched its APRIL2030 commitments and targeted to guide the development of the company’s operations over the coming decade, building on the foundations of its Sustainable Forest Management Policy 2.0. The APRIL2030 commitments include targets to increase material efficiency and circularity to achieve 98 percent chemical recovery and use 25 percent less water per product ton.

.

APRIL Group paper business head Wanyan Shaohua explained that the recycling program would have a significant impact. For example, the company has helped collect over 2,000 metric tons of waste paper for recycling purposes in Malaysia, using five recycling trucks and 10 recycle bins.

Along with introducing its recycling program, PaperOne also highlights some of the latest additions to its product range at the Dubai Expo.

The newly introduced PaperOne Script has been engineered for scholastic needs and is alkaline-sized to meet ISO 9706 standards for archival quality, while the PaperOne 75gsm two-ream pack has been specially designed for e-commerce purposes and comes with a high-quality box, which protects the two reams of paper during delivery to the end consumer.
