amed American writer John Jay Chapman once said, “Benevolence alone will not make a teacher, nor will learning alone do it. The gift of teaching is a peculiar talent, and implies a need and a craving in the teacher.”

A person who relates to this quote is Jeanne Clinton. Holding a day job at Indonesia’s premiere Tzu Chi Primary School as the Head of Mathematics, Jeanne is equipped with a bachelor’s degree in primary education, Chinese literature, and Communication studies, followed by an advanced diploma in Montessori teaching.

Currently, she is pursuing an online master’s degree in teaching and learning at Taylor’s University, Malaysia. Handling the grueling schedule of being an educator and a university student, she opted to enroll in Taylor’s 100% Online Postgraduate Programmes to have a better work-life-study balance.

The balance between new and norm

“I believe Taylor’s 100% Online Postgraduate Programmes is the best option for working professionals wanting to pursue a postgraduate certification while juggling a work-life-study balance. It is nothing less than what a conventional classroom has to offer seeing that it does not compromise its quality of education, the calibre of the lecturers, and also the essence of the teaching experience itself – from knowledge transferred, researching, and even the practical skills that we get, I am assured that I am in the good hands of the educators” said Jeanne.

She added that the rare option for postgraduate programmes in teaching is another advantage. As for the lessons taught, she credits the skills gained at Taylor’s University for shaping her thoughts and vision of how the education world is supposed to be, even the chance to apply it at her day job as a mathematics teacher.

Beyond barriers

In recent years, distance learning has gained much more traction than before. Thanks to technological advancements, students now have the option to further their studies anytime, anywhere.

As one of the few Asian universities awarded the QS Five Stars rating for Online Learning, Taylor’s 100% Online Postgraduate Programmes encapsulates a transformative system which sees the of embedding ‘nano-learning’ in its curriculum. The programme is specifically designed to allow students to have more autonomy on how they set their own schedules.

For example, what was traditionally taught in over an hour of lectures is broken into 25 to 30 bite-sized videos and interactive learning activities with no more than five minutes for each nano-learning topic – complementing an asynchronous learning experience.

All learning materials are supplied through an online learning platform early on in the semester with assignment due dates indicated, and lectures are also uploaded in the form of videos – ensuring accessibility and convenience for students to stay on track while juggling responsibilities.

“We can revisit all our learning materials and conversations, while in comparison to being in a conventional classroom, we rely heavily on our note taking skills during lectures. Additionally, for a visual learner like me, Taylor’s 100% Online Postgraduate Programmes complements my learning style as it features diverse delivery formats such as short-form videos, infographics, checkpoint quizzes, and more,” Jeanne said.

She added that besides the platform being user-friendly and easy to navigate, students are also supported by learning facilitators during classes. This allows for questions to be regularly posed and answered promptly, as well as fostering discussions between peers and lecturers.

Meanwhile, Taylor’s 100% Online Postgraduate Programmes does not compromise on its learning community as the institution organises unique events and networking sessions such as roundtables, forums, webinars, professional networking sessions, and more every year for students to build connections with industry leaders – connecting them to a strong Asian network.

“Taylor’s 100% Online Postgraduate Programmes is not a typical online learning avenue where you are alone, comprehending all the things by yourself. There is an existing community made up of likeminded peers and our lecturers. Learners will always have someone to reach out to from the university,” Jeanne stated.

Echoed by Jeanne, she attested that she was not too sure in terms of managing a teacher’s department or students prior to joining Taylor’s University. However, her experience as a master’s student taught her how to be a leader in a school or in a class. For her, the position as an educator is not about teaching and learning, but more on how to be an effective mentor, bringing out the best of people around her.

Jeanne shares her hopes in creating a more inclusive world of education following her Taylor’s 100% Online Postgraduate Programmes pursued at the top private university in Southeast Asia based on QS World University Rankings 2024.

Taylor’s 100% Online Postgraduate Programmes allows flexibility in enriching one’s academic career without having to compromise on other commitments. Designed to empower aspiring postgraduate learners with a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge needed to excel in the fields of education, business administration, applied computing, and hospitality management, the institution has intakes in February, April, June, September, and November of every year.
