n a metropolitan city where pollution reigns and clean air may seem scarce, Singapore Intercultural School (SIS) remains fervent in its desire to provide children with a safe space on campus.

In a move that also reaffirms the school’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), the school partnerswith air quality expert Nafas Indonesia to create Clean Air Zones (CAZ) across ten SIS campuses in Indonesia. This initiative aims to ensure over 4,500 students have access to cleaner and healthier air, supporting the UNSDGs related to health, well-being and quality education.

“By focusing on air quality, SIS emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive approach to education that values both academic success and the well-being of students,” Managing Director of SIS Group of Schools Aditya Shah said.

It is hoped that the partnership will allow for SIS to be able to provide the best possible learning conditions. By using Nafas’s advanced air quality systems, SIS ensures that students in cities like Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, Surabaya, Cilegon, Semarang and Palembang will enjoy a healthier school environment.

The pilot program was recently launched in their South Jakarta and Northeast Jakarta campuses, showing impressive results. Classrooms with the new air quality technology saw a significant reduction in air pollution, creating a better environment for learning and overall student well-being.

This proactive approach addresses concerns about the impact of poor air quality on children's health and learning, which can include issues like lower test scores, cognitive development problems and respiratory conditions. Based on this collaboration, at least two air purifiers are placed in each classroom as well as in other areas.

It is also said that data from the air purifier will be collected every two to four weeks and shared with the community in order to be able to track the changes moving forward. The successful introduction of Clean Air Zones highlights the school’s dedication to providing a safe and supportive learning environment, showcasing its role as a pioneer in educational innovation.

“Our collaboration is to support SIS in providing enhanced indoor air quality that prioritizes healthy living, especially for their students. It also supports SIS in achieving goal number three from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): to ‘Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages’ by implementing Clean Air Zone solutions to create pollutant-free indoor environments in all SIS campuses,” remarked Nathan Roestandy, CEO of Nafas Indonesia.

Presenting the new partnership with members of the press, educators at SIS South Jakarta also explained that while they encourage students to go outside to be active, they have also maintained indoor facilities for activities such as basketball and track and field. If outside air reaches unhealthy levels, the school can now provide a safe space for students with its clean air zones by placing air purifiers in each corner in collaboration with Nafas.
