wo multinational companies have expressed interest in investing in the Nusantara capital city project, the government has said, after Japan's Softbank pulled out of the enterprise in March.
Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said in Surakarta, Central Java, on Wednesday that technology giant Foxconn and conglomerate Fosun were exploring the possibility of investing in the new capital, with the former considering providing smart city platforms for the city.
"I wonder why people are so pessimistic, because I know that whenever there are foreign dignitaries related to investment, when I accompany the President, they always say they want to invest in the capital city project," Bahlil told reporters.
On his recent trip to Abu Dhabi with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Bahlil said, the United Arab Emirates had said it remained committed to investing at least US$20 billion in the mega project.
The Jokowi administration announced plans to move the country’s capital to an area of East Kalimantan just months after he was reelected for his second term in 2019.
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed a law that provided for the construction of the capital project, and the government has since opened tenders for some infrastructure projects for the city.
The project initially drew interest from the international community and investors, including Softbank and the UAE.
