GoTo reinforces commitment to ESG issues, publishes new sustainability report

R

eiterating GoTo’s dedication to upholding proper environmental, social and governance initiatives (ESG) in its management, GoTo recently published its fourth sustainability report titled ‘Reshaping The Future’.

Revolving around GoTo’s Three Zeros Commitment, which entails Zero Barriers, Zero Emissions and Zero Waste, GoTo hopes the report highlights its focus on transparency and accountability toward its business practices that impact on ESG issues, as well as priority stakeholders.

Covering data and performance metrics for all of GoTo’s business units, namely Gojek, Tokopedia, GoTo Financial and GoTo Logistics, the report additionally highlights further risks and opportunities presented by ESG topics that are relevant to GoTo and its ecosystem.

“This report showcases a year’s worth of highlights and learning as we work to remain part of the long-term solution to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. The journey so far has not been easy, but as a company, our persistence and resilience are what sets us apart. I must therefore express my deepest thanks to all of our employees. Their spirit and drive make such a huge impact as they work together to bring about positive change,” said president director of GoTo Group Patrick Walujo following publication of the report.

Within the report, GoTo went in depth to explain its Three Zeros approach. In its Zero Emissions section, the report details that GoTo is the first-ever publicly listed Indonesian company to achieve verified science-based targets, endorsed by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Moreover, the company reduced its emissions by nearly 11 percent in the past year, which was mostly attributed to improved energy efficiency and operational enhancements at the Tokopedia business unit.

GoTo has also quadrupled its fleet of electric vehicles since the start of the year and streamlined its shipping processes to reduce redundancies in its e-commerce marketplace. Although carbon offset is not part of GoTo’s Zero Emission strategy, through Gojek, GoTo has a GoGreener Tree Collective feature that allows its customers to offset their emission from their GoRide, GoCar, and GoFood orders. Partnering with Jejak.in, the feature reached a total of 1 million users, which resulted in over 161,845 trees being planted.

As for its Zero Waste initiative, GoTo has notably enhanced its carton waste recycling capacity to a sizeable 545.62 tonnes, installed additional paper shredding machines to process an estimated 870.46 tonnes of carton waste across all five of its logistics warehouses, and it has eliminated the use of excess packaging material to slash operating costs.

Aside from this, the company is also disseminating education to train its merchants and sellers to participate in its ecosystem-wide waste-reduction efforts, to amplify their impact outside of its own operations.

Lastly in its Zero Barriers initiative, according to the Institute for Economic and Social Research of University of Indonesia (LPEM UI),  GoTo has contributed significantly to Indonesia’s GDP through five key sectors, which are retail, manufacturing, food and beverages, information and communications technology, and transportation. The same research also found that GoTo has also contributed to the decrease in unemployment among Indonesians by around 8.25 percent out of the total reduction in unemployment measured in 2023.

Additionally, GoTo has launched contrast modes for the purposes of accessibility for its visually impaired users across all three of its consumer apps, setting a new standard for inclusivity in the industry.

Lastly, GoTo also stated that it has completed its first gender pay audit in the report, reaffirming its commitment toward gender equality.

“This is how we plan, not hope, to achieve our three-zeros commitments. We have full confidence in the collective power of our ecosystem to help us get there, for we know we cannot, and should not, do it alone. And for each and every one of you reading this today, as part of our ecosystem, know that we will continue to find actionable solutions for you to also be a part of this incredible journey, striving toward a better and more sustainable future not just for future generations, but for us today as well,” said Tanah Sullivan, head of sustainability GoTo Group.
