A recent poll has found that more than half of respondents believed in the National Police chief in his resolve and capacity to conduct a fair and transparent investigation into Yosua's murder and the police cover-up, but the opposite was true for the institution as a whole.
ational Police chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo is facing an uphill battle to clean up the police institution of entrenched corruption, but a recent survey shows that more than half of the respondents believe he could still restore public trust by resolving the scandalous cover-up of Brig. Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat’s murder.
A survey Indikator Politik Indonesia conducted after Listyo formed a special team to investigate Yosua’s murder, allegedly by his commanding officer, Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo, found that the majority of the 1,229 respondents were aware of the case.
Meanwhile, 65.7 percent of respondents believed that Listyo, a former adjutant to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo who was appointed last year as the police chief, could solve the case in a transparent manner. Only 29.2 percent believed otherwise while the remaining 5.1 percent were neutral.
Institutional blight
However, the survey found that only 57.3 percent of respondents believed that the police institution would solve the case fairly and transparently, compared to 38.1 percent who believed in the force’s capacity and 4.6 percent who remained neutral.
The survey results clearly indicate that Indonesians have greater trust in Listyo than the National Police as a whole, according to the pollster.
“The respondents perhaps see the police force as not having a single command. The gap is quite wide. This means that it is the police chief’s task to harmonize the institution,” said Indikator executive director Burhanuddin Muhtadi on Thursday.
