ndonesia and Norway have signed a contribution agreement (CA) following the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on emission reduction in the forestry sector, kickstarting the delivery of Norway’s first contribution worth US$56 million to support Jakarta’s effort in reaching its carbon sink goal.
The agreement was signed by the Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Rut Krüger Giverin and the Indonesian Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH) president director Djoko Hendratto in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Before the MoU was agreed earlier last month, Indonesia last year announced the termination of the Letter of Intent (LoI) agreement by Indonesia and Norway on emission reduction under the REDD+ scheme.
“Norway will deliver its first results-based contribution of $56 million to support the implementation of FOLU (Forest and Land Use) Net Sink 2030 Operational Plan,” Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya said during the signing ceremony at the ministry’s Manggala Wanabakti building on Wednesday.
The FOLU Net Sink 2030 Operational Plan is detailed in a ministerial decree issued in late February this year on how the government is planning to turn the forestry and land use sector into a carbon sink by 2030.
Siti said that the first and the subsequent results-based contributions from Norway would be channeled through the BPDLH under the Finance Ministry.
The government has allocated more than $300 million from the state budget (APBN) every year to reach the carbon sink, she added.
