Three-time presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto appears to be biding his time as members of his electoral alliance debate who to nominate as his running mate in next year’s election.

As of Friday, however, the chances that Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka would come out on top grew as he flew off to Jakarta to meet with political elites.

The registration window for candidates in the 2024 presidential election got off to a busy start on Thursday, with two election tickets signing up to officially kick off the race to the February ballot.

Presidential candidates Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan wasted no time by registering themselves and their vice-presidential picks with the General Elections Commission (KPU) on Thursday, the first day of the week-long registration period for next year’s presidential contenders.

The retired general insisted that he would register with the KPU by next week, as parties backing his candidacy had entered the final phase of the talks regarding his running mate.

Prabowo’s presidential bid is backed by seven parties joined in the Indonesia Onward Coalition (KIM): Gerindra, Golkar Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the Democratic Party, as well as the Star Crescent Party (PBB), Gelora and Garuda, which do not have representation in the legislature. The alliance calls itself “team Jokowi.”
