ormer deputy law and human rights minister Edward “Eddy” Omar Sharif Hiariej failed to appear at a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioning session related to a bribery case on Thursday, a few days after he tendered his resignation from the cabinet.
Eddy’s lawyer cited health issues as the cause of his absence from his first interrogation as a suspect in the case at the KPK headquarters.
“Earlier, we were ready to go [to the KPK], but Eddy fell ill,” said Eddy’s lawyer Ricky Sitohang, as quoted by kompas.com. “We eventually requested that the KPK postpone [the questioning].”
Earlier this week, Eddy sent a letter of resignation to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo that was received by the Palace on behalf of the President, who was on a working trip to East Nusa Tenggara.
The President returned to the capital on Wednesday and received the letter on Thursday.
“He has accepted the resignation of Eddy and signed the dismissal letter on Thursday afternoon,” presidential expert staff coordinator Ari Dwipayana told kompas.com.
Eddy’s lawyer Ricky dismissed speculation that Eddy’s resignation had to do with the corruption allegations, claiming there was no specific reason that the deputy minister, who took the office in December 2020, stepped down.
