Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan pledged to provide equal access to both general and religious education during his visit to Al-Aziziyah Islamic boarding school.
Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan promised to provide equality in both general and religious education if he is elected in the 2024 presidential election during his campaign tour in West Nusa Tenggara on Tuesday.
"We repeatedly convey that one of the principles of justice is equality in providing support for educational activities, both in general education and religious education. This includes Islamic boarding schools," said Anies during a visit to the Al-Aziziyah Islamic pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Gunung Sari village, West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara as quoted by kompas.com.
Anies proceeded to say that students who studied at the boarding school were the nation’s next generation who would maintain the sovereignty of the country equipped with religious knowledge.
"This boarding school is dedicated to educating and nurturing hafiz [Muslims who memorize the Quran], those who will protect the Quran in the future. We specifically would like to show our appreciation by visiting here," said Anies.
Furthermore, Anies also asked for prayers and advice from the teachers and thousands of Al-Aziziyah students so that the 2024 election could run smoothly.
"To the kyai [Islamic scholars], teachers and ulama, let me convey our hope that we carry a heavy mandate in the political process. We are hoping for prayers to make the burden feel less heavy," he said.
Apart from the pesantren, Anies had a gathering with members and supporters at the Turida Sports Hall in Mataram.
