The Constitutional Court will rule Monday on whether to uphold president-elect Prabowo Subianto’s landslide February election victory, following two weeks of courtroom drama and public appeals in response to a spate of ethics scandals that have soiled the democratic process.

Losing presidential candidates Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo have sought to throw out Prabowo’s election rout in favor of a revote, with their respective legal teams alleging massive electoral fraud and misuse of authority by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration.

The ever-popular Jokowi, whose son Gibran Rakabuming Raka ran for vice president alongside Prabowo, has been accused of unfairly enabling state support for his former rival’s candidacy, including by using social assistance programs to marshal voter support.

Eight of nine justices on the bench – excluding disgraced former chief justice Anwar Usman, who ushered through a controversial October ruling to alter an age requirement to Gibran’s benefit – will hand down the final unappealable ruling on Monday after six days of private deliberation.

Expectations are high among pro-democracy circles that the top court will deliver “progressive rulings” in the face of mounting pressure to restore its embattled credibility.

A forum of scholars dubbed “Sidang Pendapat Rakyat untuk Keadilan Pemilu 2024” (Court of Public Opinion for a Just 2024 General Election), called on Sunday for the court to account for the public criticism leveled against Jokowi and rule that the February election was “unfair”.
