The Constitutional Court began hearing disputes related to the February presidential election on Wednesday, with losing candidates Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo alleging widespread state interference and nepotism and calling for a revote under modified circumstances.

After the General Elections Commission (KPU) certified a landslide victory for president-elect Prabowo Subianto, the Anies and Ganjar camps alleged that the victory had depended on large-scale fraud.

The two former governors have turned to the Constitutional Court to challenge the election results, with Anies and his legal team being the first to lay out their arguments in front of the court’s eight justices on Wednesday morning.

In his opening remarks, Anies called the 2024 presidential election “unjust” and marred with state interference on a scale “never seen before”.

“If we don’t make corrections now, it will set a precedent for every future election at every level. The practices that occurred during the past election will be considered normal, a habit,” Anies said during the Wednesday hearing.

Speaking at a separate hearing held later in the day, Ganjar alleged that the “abuse of power” committed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration throughout the election process had “destroyed the morals of the country”.
