unner-up in the Feb. 14 presidential election Anies Baswedan has called on the Constitutional Court to issue a ruling that he hopes can arrest the decline in Indonesia's democracy.

Speaking to reporters before attending the court hearing on Monday to hear the decision on his challenge to the presidential election result, Anies declined to speculate on whether the court would rule in his favor.

"We don't know anything and we don't want to speculate but we sincerely hope that the Constitutional Court can play a role in saving our democracy, to maintain the quality of our democracy," Anies told reporters.

Anies, who won about 25 percent of vote in the election, had called for a rerun of the balloting and wanted president-elect Prabowo Subianto's running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka disqualified.

Anies alleged tacit support from the hugely popular President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had gifted Prabowo an unfair advantage, as did the choice of the outgoing leader's son as his running mate, which came about as a result of the same court's decision to change eligibility rules.

The Constitutional Court in October, which at the time was headed by the president's brother-in-law, changed a rule on the minimum age of candidates just a few days ahead of registration, which enabled Gibran to run on Prabowo's ticket.

The court’s chief justice was reprimanded by an ethics panel for intentionally allowing "intervention from an external party", which it did not name. He was later barred from taking part in election-related cases.

Prabowo and the administration of Jokowi have rejected all allegations of interference in the election.
