M. Night Shyamalan offers more than just a twisted ending in Split.
ans of American director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, The Lady in the Water) may expect that his latest movie Split would come with his signature twisted ending. Not a wrong expectation, but the twisted ending was not the only thing on offer.
Split opens with Claire Benoit’s (Haley Lu Richardson) birthday party. Being a kind-hearted girl, Claire invites the whole class to her party, including her loner classmate Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy). Casey is seen sitting alone at the party, waiting to be picked up to go home. Alas, her guardian never shows up, which prompts Claire’s father to give Casey a ride.
Off they go to the car park, along with Claire and her friend Marcia (Jessica Sula). Claire’s father is approached by an unknown guy. Soon the three girls find the guy (James McAvoy) entering the car and abducting them.
The girls awake in a windowless room. The movie then follows the kidnapper Kevin, a guy with 23 different personalities, namely Dennis, Barry, Patricia, Hedwig and more. Kevin’s alter egos take turns to be in the spotlight to protect Kevin from evil. Kevin realizes his issues and frequently visits Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckle).

Meanwhile, the girls are kept inside the room. Failing to escape, it seems Casey is the only girl who realizes how to deal with Kevin’s multiple personalities.
Shyamalan yet again proves he has a Midas touch. This psychological thriller is intense. Without revealing too much blood or disturbing scenes, the plot succeeds in making the audience feel anxious throughout the movie.
McAvoy played Kevin and his multiple personalities brilliantly. He portrayed each personality flawlessly, especially the 10-year-old Hedwig. The audience is frightened when he appears on the screen, but, at the same time, also think that Hedwig is adorable.
In addition to the brilliant scenario and actor, the twisted ending promises an interesting sequel of Split. (asw)
