Titled "Nomadic Traveler" and slated to run until Sept. 17 at Edwin’s Gallery in Kemang, South Jakarta, the exhibit features eight Indonesian and Korean artists whose works focus on experimenting with new mediums or techniques in search of virtual mobility.

One of the Indonesian artists, new media artist and UFO enthusiast Vincensius “Venzha” Kurniawan, seeks to prove that humans are not alone in this universe through his work “The Unknown” Received – Transmitted. Created over three months, this installation art allows visitors to “connect” with outer space using sound waves that are transformed into a binary signal and then transmitted into space.

“I use the binary system because it’s considered a universal code," said Venzha. "Though [aliens] may not use it, it's the simplest and easiest [code] to be translated by a colony that has a large civilization." He added that the installation art would operate 24 hours non-stop.

Meanwhile, Korean artist Lee Wan has chosen to display a travel diary titled The Travels of Lee Wan: Jakarta 2-8 Sep 2017. Born and raised in Seoul, Wan has “written” his diary on the gallery's wall alongside several memorabilia that he picked up during his journey in Jakarta, including Pop Mie instant noodles and wayang (shadow puppets). 

Wan shared with The Jakarta Post that his artwork revealed his perspective on Indonesia. “Indonesians may perceive that it’s not a new thing, but I want to convey this to them about their own country from the point of view of a person who does not know this country at all,” Wan said. “Maybe they will find these things interesting again and see differences.”

Other interesting artwork to be found at exhibition are: Journey to The Past/Migration by FX Harsono that represents the journey of Chinese people as they landed on Indonesian shores; Bezoek Bandung! All Land for Sale! by Zico Albaiquni highlighting land exploitation in the name of local tourism; Indo K-Work by Julia Sarisetiati displaying video installations of Indonesian workers in Korea; Lee Hansu's c++swingby no. 201102, a photographic series juxtaposing outer space and actual places; and Lee Sang Hyun's A Scholar in Hanyang – a Itger at Mt. Inwang showcasing the journey of a Hanyang scholar who traveled across Seoul in a hot-air balloon. (kes)
