As you might recall from the classic M&M holiday commercial from 1996, Santa Claus faints when he unexpectedly encounters two colorful M&Ms spokescandies while delivering gifts, after which the red M&M faints, leaving Yellow with a perturbed expression on his face.
According to Food & Wine, the commercial is a much-revered seasonal serving of consumer culture, annually regifted since 1996 on television screens around this time of the year.
This year, prepare to have your heart deeply warmed: M&Ms is gifting its candy-loving fans a sequel to the brand’s beloved Christmas commercial.
In the follow-up, Yellow proclaims “I have to save Christmas!” and embarks on a yuletide ride to deliver Santa’s presents to the wrong homes across the globe. Unwittingly, Yellow’s goof-up highlights the true spirit of the season: bringing everyone together to exchange gifts and hugs on Christmas morning.
Michael Magee, VP Growth Acceleration, Mars, Inc. explains: “We want to bring everyone together with M&M’S once again this holiday season by highlighting the true meaning of Christmas for a new generation of fans.”
A 60-second cut of the commercial will debut on television this Wednesday during the Christmas Tree lighting at the Rockefeller Center, New York, but it is already available for watching on the company’s YouTube page. (afr/kes)
