'Orange is the New Black' to end after season 7 "Orange is the New Black" will end after its seventh season, as announced on Wednesday through the show's official Twitter account @OITNB, (Netflix/*)

The original Netflix series Orange is the New Black will end after its seventh season.

The news was announced on Thursday through the show's Twitter account @OITNB, in a post that read “Warning: This may make you cry. The Final Season, 2019. #OITNB”. It has received over 21,000 retweets and over 49,000 likes so far.

“After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison,” showrunner Jenji Kohan said, as reported by Variety. “I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but fade to black.”

Netflix had renewed the series for three seasons before the premiere of its fourth season back in 2016. The comedy-drama follows the lives of inmates incarcerated at the Litchfield Minimum Security Prison and recently saw many members of the main cast transferred to a maximum-security facility at the end of season six.

The @OITNB post was met with emotional reactions from fans, ranging from gratitude to disbelief.

According to an article published by Deadline, the series was cancelled.

The show’s premise is based on Piper Kerman's memoir Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison. Since premiering in 2013, it has received acclaim for representing minorities and became Netflix's most-watched original series.

It has garnered multiple Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
