FromSoftware’s project with Martin marks the author’s first work that isn’t Game of Thrones-related. The Japanese video game company has produced several of the most highly-rated video games of the last decade, including Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, according to The Verge.

The Independent reported that the announcement took place during the Microsoft’s Xbox announcement at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) on Monday in Los Angeles, United States. It revealed a teaser trailer with cinematic shots with only minor hints of what the game was about.

FromSoftware head Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed during an interview posted on the Xbox website that the game had been in the making for a few years and still "has a load of work ahead of it”.

According to Miyazaki, Elden Ring is a third person RPG and has less emphasis on its action compared to their latest video game, Sekiro.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones fans who were dissatisfied with the series finale of the show took the opportunity to persuade Martin into finishing the remaining books of the series. The author, however, had reportedly claimed that finishing the last two books were not at all easy and that he is hard at work.

The announcement of Martin’s project on the video game was published on his blog after the Game of Thrones' season finale. He explained that he was working on a number of projects, one of which was the video game, which explains why he was busy recently and was not able to finish the books.

Miyazaki stated that Martin’s contribution to FromSoftware began by giving them ideas about the game’s themes and concepts. This eventually led him to creating other aspects of the game, including characters, story and other game-related features.

"The actual collaboration itself begun with Mr. Martin ever so politely confirming what sorts of themes, ideas as well as many game-related aspects I had envisioned for the game,” Miyazaki explained.

"This allowed us to have many free and creative conversations regarding the game, in which Mr. Martin later used as a base to write the overarching mythos for the game world itself.”

Additionally, Miyazaki described that the mythos consisted of fascinating characters as well as drama throughout the game, while still sticking to the main themes.

"Elden Ring’s world was constructed using this mythos and stimulus as a base. Even I myself find it hard to contain my excitement from time to time. We hope that everyone else is looking forward to the world we have created," he reported.

The release date of the game is not yet available. However, it is said that the game will be out at the end of 2020, and users will be available to play on Xbox One and PC. (vit/wng)
