JAKARTA: Religious Affairs Minister Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni has called on non-Muslims to stay out of the issue of Jamaah Ahmadiyah in order not to complicate the matter further.
"I need to make this request so Muslims can solve their own problem," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying Tuesday at the opening of a ministry working meeting.
Basyuni was referring to some non-Muslim leaders who have taken the line of moderate Islamic scholars and human rights groups in opposing the government's plan to ban Ahmadiyah.
The minister also said the government would soon issue a joint ministerial decree against Ahmadiyah, but did not specify a date.
The Coordinating Board for Monitoring Mystical Beliefs in Society (Bakor Pakem) has recommended the government outlaw Ahmadiyah, which it declared a "heretical" Islamic sect.
The recommendation has been blamed for a renewed series of attacks on Ahmadiyah followers by hard-line Muslim groups. --JP
