JAKARTA: The Indonesian Network of Women Against Tobacco (WITT) presented awards Saturday to several public figures for their efforts in fighting tobacco addiction in the country.
Among the recipients of the World No Tobacco Awards were Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, prominent businessman James Riady, entertainer Indro Warkop, disc jockey Winky Wiryawan and Formula 3 race car driver Alexandra Asmasoebrata.
WITT chair Nina Yudi conferred the award to James (photo above) during a ceremony here.
"These people have proven they can gain success without smoking. We have also given awards to former smokers, like Indro Warkop. We really appreciate his efforts to quit smoking," WITT executive and former supermodel Nana Krit told The Jakarta Post.
"This is the third year we have presented awards to people who are concerned about tobacco problems," she added.
"We hope the public figures will inspire other people, especially smokers, to fight tobacco."
The award presentation was in commemoration of World No Tobacco Day, which falls every May 31.
WITT, established in 1995, has campaigned against use of the drug at schools, offices and public places across the country. -- JP
