Bali Fashion Week is expected to promote Bali not only as a world tourism destination but also as a world shopping destination
Bali Fashion Week is expected to promote Bali not only as a world tourism destination but also as a world shopping destination.
"Through fashion week, Bali is coming to be acknowledged as the island of art and fashion where designs from East and West meet," Bali Tourism Board head I Ngurah Wijaya said Tuesday.
He said it was a good event for new designs that could be accepted by people from the East as well as by people from the West.
"With an event like this, we hope Balinese artists and designers can get international exposure because this is usually covered by several foreign media outlets. In the end we expect Bali will become known not only as a tourism destination but also as a shopping destination," he said.
The 8th Bali Fashion Week will be held this year from Aug. 24 to Aug. 28 in several places in Bali including Ubud, Sanur and Jimbaran.
In previous years, the event ran for two to three days and was centralized around Kuta, but the organizers extended the time to a week following a positive response from participants.
"This year's Bali Fashion Week will follow the theme of 'Fashion Meets Nature' to support global movements for creating a better environment," organizing committee head Mardiana Ika said.
She said it was the organizers' way of showing concern as well as following up the United Nations climate change conference held in Bali at the end of 2007.
"We want to show people concerns about environmental issues do not detract from our creativity, but rather can add value to our designs," she said.
A team from Bali Fashion Week has predicted that fabrics made from bamboo, cotton and ramie will be a trend in green fashion for some time to come.
"Besides the fashion shows, the event will also have seminars, exhibitions and a fashion street carnival," she said.
Ika said five foreign designers had confirmed their participation in the event so far: Andre Kim from South Korea, Mich Dulce and Oliver Tolentino from the Philippines, Walter Ma from Hong Kong and Jattinn Kochhar from India.
"We are still inviting other designers who are interested in joining this event to register," she said.
Jeff Kristianto, Bali Fashion Week seminar coordinator, said foreign designers would be asked to talk at the Asia Designers' Forum.
"We will also conduct several seminars with various themes such as 2009 trend forecasts to give information about future trends in the fashion market and a seminar about intellectual property rights with the title 'Jika Desain Saya Dicuri' (If my designs were stolen)," he said.
According to Ika, this event is a good opportunity to promote Bali's strengths in areas other than tourism.
"We know many designers often promote and publish their shows through media in their countries, so this will be a good chance for that," she said.
She said she was proud to see foreign designers' enthusiasm for the event even though the organizers did not provide them with logistical support.
"It is different from Malaysia Fashion Week and Singapore Fashion Week, which were fully supported by related institutions. Even though some ministries do support this event, it takes a while to get the funds at a time when D-day is getting closer," she said.
