All eyes will be on Prabowo when he visits the United States next week on the back of a state visit to China, amid concerns Trump could shake up bilateral relations once more.
resident Prabowo Subianto congratulated Donald Trump for his sweeping victory in the United States presidential election on Wednesday, just days before he embarks on an expansive diplomatic tour that will include a stopover in the US to meet the sitting president and his successor.
Last month, when the retired army general took office, he pledged to uphold Indonesia’s free-and-active foreign policy, which has enabled it to maintain rapport with the US while benefiting from significant Chinese investment.
Soon, all eyes will be on him when he visits Washington, DC next week on the back of a state visit to China, amid concerns Trump could shake up the bilateral relationship once again if he makes good on a campaign promise to impose universal tariffs on products imported to the US.
“My heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Donald Trump for being elected as the 47th President of the United States of America,” Prabowo said in a post on social media platform X late on Wednesday.
“Our strategic partnership holds immense potential for mutual benefit, and I look forward to collaborating closely with you and your administration to further enhance this partnership and for global peace and stability,” he added.
Trump will return to the White House in January, following a polarizing race opposite Vice President Kamala Harris, amid warnings that his second term could have far-reaching implications on international cooperation.
In the meantime, Prabowo is scheduled to make a stop in the US capital, provisionally from Nov. 11 to 13, pending a final decision on his roster of activities, three sources have confirmed.
