Two men supervised the construction of a cage in Halimun Salak Mountain National Park (TNHS) in Bogor regency on Thursday.
The park is building an eagle sanctuary in Salak Mountain Resort 1 in Loji village.
Ade Mamat, head of TNHS' public relations office, said the sanctuary would be used for eagle rehabilitation and as a conservation education center.
The sanctuary is the result of cooperation among TNHS, the Indonesian Information and Environment Center (PILI), Chevron Geothermal Indonesia, Raptor Indonesia, Gede Pangrango Mountain National Park (TNGP) and International Animal Rescue.
Located in Salak Mountain Resort 1, the sanctuary is more accessible than other resorts on the mountain.
The eagle sanctuary is expected to also serve researchers who specialize in eagles or other raptors, Ade said.
Wisnu Sukmantoro from PILI said three cages were to be built, one for eagle transit, another for rehabilitation and release preparation and a third for display or sanctuary. The rehabilitation cage will only be open to researchers.
The display cage is intended for a variety of eagle species, including the Javanese eagle. Eagles kept in that cage cannot be released because of their lack of survival skills, physical injury, defects or illness. Those raptors will stay in the display cage all their life.
According to Sukmantoro, only an estimated 400-600 Javanese eagles remain on Java. Most of them live in TNHS, TNGP and Ujung Kulon National Park, where the forests can still sustain them.
