TANGERANG, Banten: Actor-turned-politician Rano Karno, who was elected as the Tangerang deputy regent in March this year, has urged people to not use plastic bags when shopping at traditional markets.
"It saves money and protects the environment," Rano said at a traditional market in Bumi Serpong Damai housing complex, Tangerang on Saturday during an event called "National Clean Market Day", which was also attended by Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu.
The 48-year-actor, who has starred in dozens of films, including the popular teen flick Gita Cinta dari SMA (Love Song from High School) of 1979, suggested shoppers bring their own bags to the market.
"So we can bring our textiles-made bags, like our grandmothers did in their era," he said.
Rano, who was nominated by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle in the regency direct election in March, is now among a group of celebrities who have turned to careers in politics. -- JP/A. Junaidi
