ATAM: Riau Islands: Hang Nadim airport will soon serve international routes, beginning with the Batam-Kuala Lumpur route by Malaysian budget airline Air Asia in early September.
Airport chief Razali Abubakar said Air Asia would use Airbus A 320 planes with a capacity of 200 passengers and serve the route four times a week.
"In the past we had international flights, but they stopped due to lack of passengers. This time we hope the route can be maintained," Razali told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
He said the Batam-Kuala Lumpur flight would target Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia returning home to celebrate the Idul Fitri holidays.
He predicted 500 to 1,000 workers would daily use Batam as a transit area before they continued their flights across the archipelago.--JP
