he House of Representatives on Tuesday dismissed legislator Max Moein after finding him guilty last month of having sexually harassed his former private secretary.
House Speaker Agung Laksono read out the House's Disciplinary Council decree on the dismissal during a plenary session Tuesday.
"Although the criminal investigation into the case is still underway, the council has acted quickly to dismiss the lawmaker in order to uphold the House's code of ethics," the decree says.
It is the first time a legislator has been dismissed from the House for obscenity. In December 2006, a Golkar legislator resigned after his affair with a dangdut singer had been widely publicized.
The council had submitted its decree on Max's dismissal to the House speaker last week.
Max, a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), was accused of repeatedly sexually harassing his private secretary, Desy Vidyawati, from 2005 to 2006. The alleged incidents took place inside Max's office at the House.
However, Max, a member of the House's Commission XI on financial affairs, has denied the allegation.
During its investigation into the case, the disciplinary council questioned Max and Desy.
The council announced the result of its investigation late in August. It unanimously found Max guilty and recommended his expulsion from the legislative body.
Shortly after the verdict, the PDI-P announced that it had removed Max from its list of House representatives.
