Ukraine, the largest country wholly in Europe, is seeking Indonesia's cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space, the head of the National Space Agency of Ukraine (NSAU) said Sunday in Jakarta.
"Ukraine and Indonesia signed a framework agreement on Thursday on cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space," NSAU general director Yuriy S. Alexeyev told The Jakarta Post on Sunday at the Hotel Sahid Jaya.
Alexeyev and Indonesia's National Aeronautics and Space Agency (Lapan) chief Adi Sadewo Salatun signed the agreement on behalf of their countries.
Alexeyev, Ukraine's top missile expert, and his two colleagues arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday to explore opportunities in the fields of remote sensing, satellite tracking, and exchange of information on weather and seismic zones.
"It took more than 18 months to complete the negotiations," said Serhii L. Tarhonii, the Ukrainian Embassy's charg* d'affaires.
But Alexeyev pointed out this agreement was only a framework agreement.
"It's the first step for our future cooperation. It provides a framework to have future cooperation programs," Alexyev said.
Ukraine played an important role in space research when it was still part of the Soviet Union.
Launched in March 1992, the NSAU has emerged as a global player in launching earth observation satellites, communications satellites and rockets. Ukraine's Zenith vehicles, for instance, are used in the International Space Station program.
According to Alexeyev, Ukraine is in a good position to work with Indonesia in Southeast Asia.
"Because both countries have satellites, we can exchange information on so many aspects," he said.
"Moreover, Indonesia lies in an active seismic zone. We do have some seismic zones. We already have similar cooperation with China, India, Australia and of course Russia."
He also emphasized that all programs between Ukraine and Indonesia must be of mutual benefit to each partner.
"Our cooperation with Indonesia is for the benefit of both countries," Alexeyev said.
